Back to school 2 be an LPN or RN

Posted in Group:

I have been unemployed since the end of June and my money is running out. I have decided to go back to school. At my age, I'm 46, I'm more than a little worried. I want to go to school to become a LPN or a RN. I know that I'll be in school for at least 2 years before I can get work. I'll also take another 2 years of classes to get my BS in nursing. Is there anyone here that can tell me what to expect? Is this even a realistic goal for someone my age?

It is never too late. It is up to you and if it is your dream, take the opportunity and go for it. Extra knowledge and extra profession is never too much. Wishing you all your dreams to come true. God bless you.

I am almost 43 and I start law school in January, I too am unemployed. I am having the same thoughts...money, time, too old???? my head is spinning....THEN I looked around me and decided to simplify my life so I could afford school. I figure I have been out of work in my filed for a year - that's one whole year I could have already done in school. Time passes so quickly when we hit our 40's. Just think in four years you will be 50 (the new 40) and you will be a Nurse. If you don't do it, in four years you will be 50 and wondering why you didn't do it.............. If you eat healthy, drink tons of water and get 30 min of exercise a day - eat an apple 20 min before a meal - you will be the healthiest Nurse in town!!! Look at the big picture........and Nursing is great profession, you can always find work at very good pay.....we live longer these days and WE are NOT TOO OLD to go back to school.........so, in four years you'll be a Nurse and I'll be a lawyer! But ONLY do it if you truly want to be nurse....otherwise go to school for something.....but definitely go! You have an amazing opportunity to have a do-over and meet so many new people and have a whole new life....go for it........... blessings and smiles :~) b

Your attitude is your paintbrush. How will you paint your day?

It's strange but as excited about my future as I am, I'm also scared. I made the decision to become an Oncology RN. My mother passed away from Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Before she passed she had some great nurses. I'm scared that I will fail in reaching my goals. I'm scared that I won't find my soulmate, that I wont fall in love and be loved in return. I want to be a practicing Oncology RN by the time I'm 51 with a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing. I've never set such a high goal for myself before. I know it will be difficult, working full time and going to school full time. Are you scared ad well since you're going to law school?

I suggest using www.goal-buddy.com/ it's really awesome and sends you email reminders or texts.

I too am going back to school this summer and am 42. I never finished anything..took a bunch of courses but all different areas education, acctg, pol sci. I have lost most of my hearing and yet here I am needing to go back to school because I'm tired of living from ck to ck and not receiving that raise because I don't have a degree or missed so many opportunities for not having it.

Remember - No one was ever raised a statue for giving up or not finishing something. This is what I keep telling myself.

Love - once we become in balance with our needs of who we are I have hope that love will find its way to me.

Hope this helps

Blessings!

beware of common wisdom.

Yes, there are jobs in nursing, but most require experience as a nurse. It took my friend two years to find her first nursing job and she had to apply to thousands of jobs before she was able to land one. She was not the exception, she was the rule.

More education isn't always the answer and could easily end up being a waste of time and money. If you are truly passionate about becoming a nurse, then do it. The older students in the nursing classes tend to do the best. They are the most passionate and most willing to do the work. Just make sure that you go into it with your eyes open.
